OII Australia’s running costs are funded out of the pockets of our members.

We don’t receive funding from state or federal governments, peak health and human rights bodies or charitable organizations of any kind.

We rely on individuals like you.

Your donations, should you choose to make them, will help us do a great deal more than maintain this website through covering our hosting and internet access costs.

For example, we are often called on to travel interstate to represent intersex at conferences, presentations, launches and at key organizations we are working with.

Being there…

Simply being there, visible and available, makes a real difference we’ve found.

We are constantly reminded that most people do not even know that intersex exists, much less what it is and what kind of lives we live.

Showing our faces and telling our own stories has proven to be crucial in our struggle for human rights, protection against discrimination and vilification, patient-centred medical treatment, the end of non-consensual experimental cosmetic surgery upon the genitals of intersex newborns, and marriage equality.

So far, other people who are not intersex have tended to stand up instead of us and have told stories about our lives from their perspective, not ours. As a result, we still do not have anything – rights or protections – that everyone else takes for granted.

We are still less than second class citizens.

Telling our own stories…

To date we have told our own stories by standing up and speaking wherever we can.

But can you imagine how effective it would be if we could do that as audio recordings, videos, photographic exhibitions, podcasts and in print as brochures and posters?

So many opportunities to do all of this have presented themselves, but we’ve had to pass them by because we just did not have the money to do anything about them.

We want to change all that now.
